End paper

Title: Corrugated roadscape

Travelling through the Gulf Country in north Queensland , I found the corrugated roads  were making the wet paint  pool and run interestingly, so I scooped up handfuls of earth to mix with watery acrylics and loved the result. This image can be interpreted in many ways, perhaps this is the natural function of end papers?

p4 opposite Word Index

Title: Galahs

This image of galahs taking off in a flock is a common sight
all over inland Australia where timber has been cleared
for grazing and cropping.

P6,7 In Cooper Country

The central fabric panel for this painting was created on
location when we camped at Cullyamurra Waterhole on
Cooper’s Creek in 2007. Sand, gel and paint were
manipulated into an impression of the dry, almost
colourless landscape behind the creek. It was then
mounted on board and decorated echoing some
of the rock art we had seen in the vicinity. Jock's
words parallel some of the feelings put into the painting.

P8,9 The nature of Australia

Title: Rainbow Gorge
What is the nature of Australia? I had several
ideas for matching this poem, but found them
unsatisfactory until I came across this photo
of a painting I once did at Fraser Island using
the ochres on the ground around me.

P10,11 The Farming Game

Title: Clifton Harvest
painted after driving through the Darling Downs just
before a variety of crops were taken off. The season
was good and the crops were high, every farmer's dream.

p12,13 Thought from the Bush

Title: Moon night at Diamantina Billabong

When I began this painting we were camped at Birdsville
in a peaceful spot. Soon moonshine replaced sunshine, night
birds began to get busy, day birds slept, and night fell quietly.

Jock's poem begins:
Bush camped, in quiet of night;
alone, yet in the family of earth...

P14,15 The over-helpful dog

From my sketch books
- 'Slim'
A favourite dog posed for me some years ago,
he makes a perfect subject for this amusing poem.

P16,17 Favourite Horse

Title: Unblinking

I struggled for a way to portray this emotional piece adequately.
Jock said 'it's the eye that gets me' - and he was right.

P18,19 Emily's Grave

Title: Lonely headstone

I've seen many remote places that could be the site for Emily's
grave, and read many inscriptions that tell poignant tales - this
was a site imagined specially for the poem.

P22,23 For this day

Title: For this day

Not sure who Jock wrote this one for, but I love summer
mornings when the sun streams in with red gold light,
enough to bring on soft singing for the day ahead!

slow tears that fall each side of window panes
...'

P26, 27 Maranoa River Song

Title: Maranoa River Reflections
In 2010 we camped at Fishermen's Bend on the Maranoa
River, completely exhausted and in need of a break. The
tranquillity of this place has stayed with me, and I think
emerged in some way in this painting. I added a simple
graphic in Photoshop to translate the celebrating couple.

P28, 29 Bad News Day

From my sketch books
I often take a sketch book when watching camp drafts
in many different locations. it helps fill down-time between
the action. It wasn't difficult to see that these little sketches
were the way to handle the heart-wrenching subject of this poem

P30, 31 Quotes

Title: West Macs

This is a composite 'drive' painting done in 2010 as we drove
through the West MacDonnell Ranges in NT. Its all-over patterning
made it ideal to act as a border for the quote collection.

P32, 33 Loneliness

Title: Stark dark plain

this started life as one of a series of pastel drawings, I really wanted to capture
the poem's imagery but I wasn't happy with any of them  and publication was imminent.
I photographed them all trying to get inspiration and direction - then
took them into Photoshop and tinkered a little bit - I was happy with this result.

P34,35 Dancing Shoes

Title: Roxborough brolgas
I knew immediately what I'd use to convey 'dance a coloured course through life...'
The original was painted in the vehicle driving through Roxborough Downs on the
Georgina River in western Queensland.

P36,37 What then?

Title: Stranger in the room
what a challenge this one was. Initially I had a different concept of the
stranger and her surroundings. Jock said 'it's as if she's in a cage and the
rest are looking in' - good enough for me, she's a bird! I photographed
some likely looking candidates from my sketch book and went to work
in PhotoShop

P38,39 The Final Straw

Title: Shire Hall
The original was painted on a circle of glass for the Surat
Memorial Park project in 2009. Shire amalgamation in
Queensland meant of course that Warroo Shire now
exists only in history, leaving a bitter taste for some.

P40,41 Spaces

Title: Through to Cork Station

taken from our campsite between Winton and Cork Station. Here we found
a bora ring nearby, and this area is a prime site for prehistoric fossils. My idea
of a special place in both time and space.

P44,45 Shock

Title: Rejecting Mastery
This is a digital montage based on an original painting created
as cathartic stress relief while my Son #2 was trying his form as a
rodeo rider at a local turnout. Luckily his story had a happier
ending than Jock’s!

P46,47 Roma's St Paul's

Title: Framework ringing

We were travelling in WA and I needed to finish the
work for the book. I only had some tiny photos of
St Paul's taken off the internet so Jock emailed photos
he'd taken inside the church - I remember the soaring
feeling of those arches when our choir once
sang in St Paul's

Title: Hot green and flood lilies (click image to see whole painting)
A good season, ah, I remember it well! I painted it in 2010 as we drove
through lush scenes like this between Blackall and Longreach - the
country was most definitely 'in the fierce grip of the best season
in 20 years'!

P52,53 Dream of the Roma Cup

the racing industry, but chose to use this photograph of

more dusty, dreamlike quality.
