Emu totem

The poem:

There are emus silently stalking

at the edge of the ridge,

bobbing, swaying, beaking up life from the sweet soil

washed there by rains of time

their quiet  thrum could be the echo of a heartbeat

or the far-off rumble of the first storm of summer

or is it the slow beat of strong feet on hollow ironstone

as the flyers pause momently to graze...
