Dig Tree - April 21, 1861

2008

Most of you know the story - as Burke and King struggled back to Depot 65 (the Dig Tree), William Brahe departed with his party, leaving buried provisions and instructions re where to dig. The explorers found the hidden cache but were too weak to follow. The irony is that despite being the first to cross Australia, Burke & Wills remained ignorant of the secrets to survival in the inland. Today this waterhole on Cooper’s Creek is still rich in nardoo and wildlife.
