SUNRISE - RAM PADDOCK HILL AT BUNGINDERRY

2009

This is the second in a small series of images using a linocut created at a recent artists’ camp at Bunginderry Station, Quilpie. Without the printing press supplied at the camp, the print is more organic, showing up the imperfections of hand-rubbing the ink from block to paper.

The subjects used for the linocut were a piece of gnarled timber and scattered stones on top of the Ram Paddock Hill at Bunginderry (reminded me of the bendee ridges at home but a bit redder and vegetation sparser).

When collaging the print to canvas I boo-booed, it’s upside down! I believe mistakes like this are meant to happen –the rocks acquired some trunks and became trees, so instead of the patterned timber we have the hill itself.

The canvas was undercoated with raw sienna acrylic and washed with natural ochres. These were found in the Quilpie area and elsewhere, ground in mortar and pestle, and mixed with acrylic medium to render them stable. The print was hand coloured with natural ochres and finishing touches were made with outliners – for me, blue, gold and copper are indispensible outback colours.
